Honorary Doctorate for Aleida Assmann

9. December 2008

Prof. Aleida Assmann is the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the Theological Faculty of the University of Oslo. The Constance-based literary scholar was awarded for exceptional academic achievement, having prompted a revolution in the humanities and social sciences, as stated in the university’s laudation. Assmann’s research in the field of collective cultural memory was also acknowledged as groundbreaking and as inspiring research in theology, particularly at the University of Oslo where interdisciplinary religious studies is a major aim.

Assmann, a member of the Department of English and American Studies at the University of Konstanz, is the first non-theologian ever to receive an honorary doctorate from the School of Theology in Oslo. In its conclusion, the laudation looks forward to a productive and mutually beneficial cooperation with the University of Konstanz.
